Why Apple's First Foldable iPhone Is the New AI Phone Entry: Intelligence, Siri AI, Agents
Before yesterday's keynote the foldable was often called Ultra. The shipping name is iPhone Duo: passport-sized shut, a 7.6-inch canvas open. If you handle JSON, the question is not a bigger screen. It is whether posture, Split View, and on-screen awareness will stuff an illegal object into an App Intent. This piece treats Duo as a new AI-phone entry, then splits Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, and the coming agent.
Quick overview
| Idea | One line | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | First foldable iPhone: 5.4 out, 7.6 in, one ratio | Glance shut; agent canvas open |
| Apple Intelligence | An OS-level AI fabric — not a chat app | On-device + Private Cloud Compute |
| Siri AI | A natural-language dispatcher for App Intents | Sees the screen; talks in Split View |
| AI Agent | A multi-step tool loop; state must be legal | posture + intent + entity_id |
Remember the split: Duo is the entry, Apple Intelligence the base, Siri the dispatcher, the agent the loop, JSON Schema the diameter. Flatten them into “the foldable got smarter” and the next hop will parse prose.
The day after: rename it, then ask about the entry
Today is 10 September 2026. Surprise and Shine is over. Apple shipped the first foldable iPhone; the name is iPhone Duo, not the Ultra of the rumor cycle. CEO John Ternus called it the most transformational change since the original iPhone.
If “new AI-phone entry” only means a larger inner pane, you are still writing a hardware review. The entry is: glance when shut, let Siri bind an on-screen entity when open, talk on one side of Split View and execute on the other.
- Confirmed: Newsroom specs, iOS 27 / 27.1, and the public Apple Intelligence / Siri AI calendar.
- Confirmed, not in stores: pre-order 16 October, sale 23 October; Duo ships iOS 27.1.
- Yesterday's rumor tags, retired: the foldable is real. A20 Pro, dual batteries, and the 31 / 24-hour claims were read out by Apple.
The software contract has been in the developer docs since June. What today adds is form: a posture field on the Intent. Hardware unpacking lives in how strong iPhone 18 AI is; this article is the entry.

What iPhone Duo is (put the form into an object first)
Shut, Duo is about passport-sized, with a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display — about 90 percent of iPhone 18 Pro's area. Open, it is the thinnest iPhone ever: a 7.6-inch inner pane with nano-texture, about 50 percent larger than 18 Pro Max. Both panes share one aspect ratio, so content scales instead of being cropped and re-laid.

- Silicon and heat: A20 Pro (same as 18 Pro), 2 nm, dual 16-core Neural Engine, 50 percent more unified memory bandwidth. A custom vapor chamber; up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.
- Batteries: one pack per side, treated as one by the scheduler. Up to about 31 hours of video on the inner display, 44 on the outer, 24 hours of mixed use.
- iOS 27: Dock and chrome move to the side; the status cluster sits in a corner; Split View, two windows of one app, and saved app pairs land on iPhone for the first time. Content reacts to the hinge.
- StandBy on either pane, even unplugged. Siri Camera lets Siri see what you see.
For JSON work, fold the form into an object first: posture is open or closed, and which pane holds the entity. Do not wait for “the user opened it” before you fill the Intent.
Why the fold becomes an AI entry
A slab's entry is the earpiece and the Dynamic Island. Duo adds two surfaces that can be present at once: the outer pane for a glance, the inner pane to spread a task. Apple's own phrase is “intelligent personal hub.” A hub is not a chat box. It is where the person is, where the pane is, and where the object is.
The entry holds because four already-announced pieces stack — not because OLED got taller:
- Two surfaces. Shut: notifications, StandBy, a viewfinder preview. Open: multi-step work. The same Intent must not assume one UI for both postures.
- Split View. Mail or Safari on one side, Siri on the other. An agent finally has a standing canvas on iPhone without covering the host.
- On-screen awareness + View Annotations. “Send this one” has something to bind. Without an entity mark, Siri still sees pixels.
- Hinge state. Content reorients and changes pane as it folds. Posture is a first-class field, not an animation leftover.
Duo is an entry not because it starts at $1,999, but because it turns “glance → point at an object → execute in Split View” into a system path. A slab can run Siri AI. The fold is the first time that path feels like a desk.
What Apple Intelligence adds on Duo
Apple Intelligence is still an OS fabric: which compute stays on device, which goes to Private Cloud Compute, and which capabilities Siri, Spotlight, and third-party apps can see. It is not “ChatGPT behind a hinge.”
What the Duo newsroom adds is how that fabric lands on two panes:
- Personal context. Find “what I need now” across Messages, Mail, and Photos, with attribution — not a sourceless blurb.
- Image tools. Spatial Reframing, Extend, upgraded Clean Up; Image Playground closer to photoreal, SynthID later.
- Safari Notify Me. Watch a restock or a price drop. That is a subscription, not a license to pour a whole HTML page into 32K every minute.
- Call Context. A confirmation or order id can surface when you call a business — still an object, not a transcript dumped as prose.
The base is unchanged: the default path never hits your cloud, and the object is born on device or in PCC. The window is still tight. how strong iPhone 18 AI is already defined “strong”: whether an illegal object enters the app. Duo only gives that base two panes and a hinge.
Siri AI: dispatch on 7.6 inches, do not chat on it
Siri AI ships as a beta with iOS 27. Apple's line: it becomes “even more useful” on the large inner display. Useful means: hear a sentence, fill an App Intent, optionally bind an on-screen entity, let the host execute. It does not mean wallpapering 7.6 inches with cloud small talk.
Duo adds three announced paths: a dedicated Siri app (history synced privately over iCloud); talking in Split View while you look at content; Siri Camera so Siri sees the viewfinder. Reuters, citing Apple: about 300,000 apps at launch — if those apps speak App Intents.
What the system hands you is still a parameter object, not a paragraph. After the fold, the object also carries posture and the focused entity. A SummarizeOnScreen hop looks about like this:
{
"intent": "SummarizeOnScreen",
"app": "com.example.mail",
"source": "siri",
"context": {
"posture": "open",
"focused_entity": "thread:A-1042"
},
"parameters": {
"thread_id": "A-1042"
}
}
the AI Agent guide draws “the model proposes, the host runs” inside the full loop. Siri is the dispatcher: it picks the Intent; your app is still the host. Missing fields, bad enums, treating closed as open — if the Intent is loose, the incident happens in your perform(), not in the Split View demo.
The coming agent: the canvas is new, the loop is not
Apple did not ship a product named Agent on Duo. It shipped a canvas: Split View, the Siri app, on-screen awareness, personal context. The coming agent is still a LanguageModelSession calling tools for several steps on device or in PCC.
The skeleton matches cloud Function Calling: the model emits a name and arguments; the host parses, validates, executes, and puts the result back. The fold changes the UI assumption, not the dictionary:
- The default catalog is still Intents the system can see, not a
tools[]list you maintain alone. - The inner pane is the agent canvas: tool results on one side, the conversation on the other. Results should still be objects, not screenshot prose.
- The outer pane is a glance. Do not start a stock-changing multi-step loop while shut; compress state into a summary.
- PCC is still about 32K. Split View is not a bigger window. Tool results eat context first.
{
"agent": "foldable_session",
"step": 2,
"posture": "open",
"tool": "LookupOrder",
"arguments": {"order_id": "A-1042"},
"result": {
"order_id": "A-1042",
"amount": 99.00,
"status": "paid"
},
"ui": {"pane": "inner", "next": "CreateRefund"}
}
The blob above is a minimal fold-loop state: pane: inner tells the host where to draw. the AI Agent guide explains the loop itself. Duo is the first time “what's next” has somewhere to stand.
Handoff across the hinge: write the Schema before the animation
The hinge animation is the system's. What you stabilize is the handoff object: current posture, Intent name, the on-screen entity, and a disposable summary. Lose the summary and the loop can continue. Lose entity_id and Siri is talking to pixels again.
A minimal Duo handoff can feed an App Intent, @Generable, and the host validator at once:
{
"$id": "https://example.com/schemas/duo-handoff.json",
"type": "object",
"properties": {
"posture": { "type": "string", "enum": ["closed", "open"] },
"intent": { "type": "string" },
"entity_id": { "type": "string" },
"summary": { "type": "string" }
},
"required": ["posture", "intent", "entity_id"],
"additionalProperties": false
}
Keywords live in the existing Schema piece. why AI needs JSON Schema already said it: Schema is the diameter, not the sentence “please return JSON.” Pull posture / entity_id with JSONPath extract. Do not pour a whole mail thread into 32K.
Debug by formatting locally, then JSON Diff against last week's passing object. Do not paste contacts or orders onto a public site. Guided Generation stops illegal tokens; a refund fired while shut is still your auth bug.
Entry, base, dispatch, loop — how they stack
Flatten Duo into “the foldable got smarter” and you lose the jobs. Split them:
- iPhone Duo is the entry: two panes, a hinge, Split View — where the object appears.
- Apple Intelligence is the base: where the model runs, how large the window is. Siri AI is outbound dispatch.
- The agent is the loop: multi-step tools inside a session. JSON Schema is the shared diameter;
postureis the new field.
A comparison table, so they are not synonyms next time:
| Layer | What the system is doing | Without a Schema |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | Opens, splits, spreads the task on the inner pane | Treats shut as open; multi-step side effects on the outer pane |
| Siri AI | Turns a sentence into an Intent and looks at the screen | Missing fields, or the wrong on-screen entity |
| AI Agent | Calls tools for several steps in a session | State is guessed from a chat log; the next pane binds the wrong object |
| JSON Schema | Does nothing — it is the ruler | If the ruler lives only in a Swift macro, cloud and CI cannot measure posture |
A refund often uses all four: the user opens Duo, Siri sees the thread, the agent calls LookupOrder, the host runs CreateRefund. AI agents and the JSON Schema workflow is about how the gates line up.
How to ship in 2026 (write posture, then wait for 23 October)
- Keep
schemas/intents/andschemas/handoff/in the repo, each with a stable$id. A handoff needs at leastposture,intent, andentity_id. - Write the JSON Schema before
@Generableor the Intent. The type is a projection, not the source. - Side effects (lookup, refund, mail) go through an Intent. Extraction, triage, and handoff go through Guided Generation. Default-deny stock-changing Intents while shut.
- Annotate on-screen views. Without an entity, Siri's “this one” cannot bind your object.
- One test for
open, one forclosed. The testing framework runs objects, not hinge ads. - Inspect secrets and user fields only in the browser: formatting, JSON Diff, zero upload.
The directory can be thin. What matters is posture before the demo. 23 October will change the box photo. The diameter should stabilize first.
Common pitfalls
- Calling Duo Ultra. The shipping name is iPhone Duo. Yesterday's rumor name is retired.
- Treating the inner pane as the agent. A canvas is not a loop. The loop still needs legal parameters and a host that executes.
- Testing only the open posture. Glance and StandBy while shut are the default entry. Accidental side effects usually start there.
- Writing only Swift types, with no JSON source. The cloud API and the eval suite will drift on
posture. - Promising Siri AI to EU users on 14 September. Apple says Siri AI is not initially available on iOS in the EU.
FAQ
Why is the foldable an AI entry, and not just a larger screen?
A slab can already run Apple Intelligence. Duo folds the entry into glance-on-the-outer, spread-on-the-inner, talk-in-Split-View. Without posture and an entity, Siri is only talking to more pixels.
Is iPhone Duo the rumored Ultra?
It is the same product line landing under a different name. Apple's shipping name, as of yesterday, is iPhone Duo: passport-shaped, matched aspect ratios, from $1,999, on sale 23 October.
Will Siri AI work on Duo the day it goes on sale?
The English Siri AI beta starts 14 September with iOS 27; French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish follow in October. Duo ships iOS 27.1 on 23 October. Siri AI is not initially available on iOS in the EU. Gate on language and region — do not write “global day-one.”
Siri can see the screen. Do I still need a JSON Schema?
Yes. On-screen awareness picks which entity to bind. Schema decides whether the parameters are legal. Missing fields, bad enums, and a refund while shut can still reach your perform().
Do I need two Intent names for open and closed?
No. One Intent plus a posture field; tighten allowed side effects while shut. View Annotations mark the entity; the handoff carries entity_id. Write the file, then wait for Duo in Device Hub.
Conclusion
Apple's first foldable is an AI entry not because of 7.6 inches. For JSON work, the entry is: glance when shut, point at an object when open, let Siri dispatch in Split View, and let the host still execute against a Schema.
Duo is the entry, Apple Intelligence the base, Siri dispatch, the agent the loop, Schema the diameter. Before 23 October, put schemas/duo-handoff.json in the repo. Then decide which fields deserve 32K.
